Victoria Kelly is a New Zealand composer whose tutors were Elmer Bernstein, David Raksin and Christopher Young. She cooperated with the likes of SJD, Nathan Haines and Shapeshifter. Victoria Kelly composed the score for „Out of the Blue“ (2006) and collaborated with Fran Walsh on additional music for „The Lovely Bones“ (2009). „Under the Mountain“ is a film directed Jonathan King. He was also the director of „Black Sheep“ (2007), and Victoria wrote the music for it.„Under the Mountain“ is a horror adventure movie based on the novel by Maurice Gee, so it’s easy to predict what kind of music is on this score. It is surely not meant for cowardly children. It is dark and scary piece of music portending something evil. An alarming sound of drums heralds no battle, but a creepy clash against the evil. There are as well brighter moments which soothe the general reception of this mysterious score. The stuff is grounded on sonic contrasts that manifest themselves in powerful and gentle tones. I am delighted with the power of the whole instrumentation and can sincerely recommend Victoria Kelly’s work to the fans of all Danny Elfman’s dreary scores.
